Usually, actually most often its the sway bar bushings in the front, may sound like one side but its likely both. As well the sway bar can strike a bumper on the drive shaft that is usually the loud clunk sound. If the car is sitting lower because of lowering springs or from worn springs or overweight vehicle at all its probably both. Sway bar bushings, a cheap easy fix the other depends if the springs are involved or not.

Thanks; I'll swap them out today. Even if it turns out to be something else, they'd be a good preventive maintenance investment.

not the sway bar bushings. Noise is coming from the top of the strut tower.

All thats there is the strut mounts and bearings, how high up do the top caps of the strut mounts look under the wiper tray? If they are noticebly high you will need to change those out but its not normally the reason it makes those sounds, there is really nothing there unless the strut nuts are loose?
