under the engine area? I know there are the two vertical panels on either side of the motor but is there one or two that are actually on the underside of the motor? I inherited this Beetle with a total of three; two sides and one "under". It looks like there were two on the underside at one time. Also is there an aftermarket alternative (other than the nice $300 aluminum one) or stock only? I think they call them splash shields.

There are only three pieces that comprise the splash/sound shields.

The 2.0L and 1.8T have a smaller belly "pan" than the TDI does (incidentally, the smaller ones are also cheaper).

As far as I'm aware there isn't an aftermarket plastic pan.

There are two different $275 aluminum ones (Evolution and Diesel Geek), a $180 steel one (Defender), and an OEM steel one (see thread), in addition to the OEM plastic one that came on the car.

And there's no aftermarket plastic one because plastic skid plates are pointless and stupid.
