Default Squeak/Screeching noise after Engine starts?

Basically about 80% of the time I start up my bug, it'll make this nasty screeching noise like if the enginge didn't want to turn over.

1999 2.0 Automatic
100k miles
Did 80k maint., none after
Changed and flushed oil and that wasn't it.

Any ideas? I don't know if the timing belt or water pump were done by the previous owner and I've gone 20k in 2 years so far...

Could be the starter squawking...though that is more common on manual trans models. Timing belts usually give more of a "whoosh" sound at idle when going bad.

Have someone else start it while you have your head under the hood. If it's on the driver's side, starter. If it's on the pass side...timing belt related (roller, tensioner, etc) or something on the accessory drive.

If there is any doubt, which it sounds like there is, get your timing belt, water pump, rollers, tensioner and everything else replaced ASAP. Go with a quality kit that has a metal impeller water pump and make sure the one-time use only stretch bolts for the motor mount are replaced and torqued correctly.

Ah I have this same problem as well. I took it to the shop and of course when they had it, it didn't make the noise. Mine was making a screeching noise in addition to a rough/stalled start.

I switched to using a higher grade fuel and occasionally put some cleaner in and it's been about two weeks since my car has had trouble starting or made that awful noise. So maybe you could try that?

Beckweed: That's it exactly. Makes sense that it's been doing it only when it's relatively cold.

DZL, Emm: Yeah, I'd do all that if I had the money. I'm broke.

Also my ABS light decides to light up randomly, not cure if that's related.
