Default I'm a newb with a newb interior light question

I have what is probably an incredibly stupid question, so bear with me. I just bought a 2006 Salsa Red New Beetle convertible, and I love it. I've always driven Honda's, so the VW is a new experience for me. Unfortunately, my car didn't come with an owners manual, and I'm a bit confused about the interior lights. There is a switch to the left of the steering wheel that turns on the speedometer, dashboard lights, etc. Will I need to turn the switch to the on position each time I get in the car at night, or is there a way to get them to go on and off automatically? The interior lights in my Element turn on, when the key is in the ignition and I turn on the head lights, but the beetle lights seem to just stay on if I don't use the switch. Thanks guys, like I said I'm a newb.

Yes, you have to turn them off every time.
