Default steering lash

...I think "lash" is the right term. I'm closing a deal on a 2000 GLS as daughter's first car. It's in very good physical shape and engine and transmission checks out. I'm a little concerned about a little "lash" -- dead spot -- in the steering. You can turn the steering wheel about an inch from left to right without turning the wheels.

I had this issue with a van I had many years ago, and I'm trying to remember what the issue was. Idler arm bushing? I don't know enough about the beetle's steering to know if it even has an idler arm.

This issue isn't enough to stop me from buying the car, but I should get it fixed. If it's easy, I might do it myself. Is this a common condition? What are the most common causes? Anything else I should be looking for in this particular make and model?

With a NB that old, some wear in the tie rod ends would be expected. Have the tie rod end bushings checked for looseness and see if they need to be replaced. Hopefully that will tighten the steering back to normal. My 99 1.8 turbo GLS still has very solid and tight steering after 74,000 miles. While you have a chance check the power steering fluid reservoir for level of the fluid. It's a good idea to drain and refill with VW Hydraulic fluid sold at the VW dealers part department every so often just to get rid of the old dirty fluid. Don't use any other type of power steering fluid especially auto tranny fluid in this system. VW makes their own that is not very expensive that keeps all the seals and moving parts in the pump in good condition. Good Luck, JK

Default Thanks

Thanks, I'll have the tie rod bushings checked. We bought the car, and are satisfied so far. It's very peppy, looks good, and gets very good gas mileage. Daughter is more than satisfied. She's a little annoyed that I keep asking to borrow it.

It's good to hear you all are loving the car but it sounds to me like you may need to buy another NB for yourself. You'll never regret it!

Welcome to the Org!
