Unhappy Trunk won't shut all the way

Hello, so I'm having a problem with my trunk. It doesn't seem to want to shut all the way. It seems to be stuck in a sort of half closed deal. I can't open it but there is some give when I lift. This just started this evening. I looked where it latches and nothing seems to be obstructing it. The only new factor I can think of is that it just started raining. I live in Santa Barbara and surprisingly we had rain practically all day and most of the night. I did drive the car to get groceries last night and the trunk shut fine. Any suggestions?

Thank You

Seems that the latch is not returning to the open position. Actuate the switch with the lid open and see if anything changes. You did not say what year. Earlier models have a key under the VW badge. Later models just have the switch in the door and the remote. It could be a return spring. Here's what it looks like under the plastic cover...

Its a 1999, so yeah it does have the key entry under the VW disc on the trunk. Its seems to be closing fine now. All day yesterday it was fine. Maybe the rain did affect it and now that it's dry the latch works fine. Thanks for your response, hopefully I don't have this problem everytime it rains.
