Default Check engine light.

SO I have decided to get my water pump and timing belt changed finally. I have a 2001 1.8l Turbo automatic. I accelerated very quickly the other day, and the check engine light popped on.

I called a mechanic and they will be looking at it, to make sure everything is up to speed, and doing the water pump and timing belt on nov 4th. Now thats a few weeks away. using my car in the mean time, is this going to hurt my engine even more?

Also what kind of problems appear with the check engine light? How much about are the cost? Thanks for all your help guys. I am worried about my poor beetle

It depends on what code it is that triggered the CEL. Go to an Autozone or something and find out what the code is.

That's what Autozone is... an auto parts store. NAPA should do it too. They're at 2275 Commercial Street. 503-325-2411

Do you have an owner's manual? If so, read it. It will seriously help A LOT with little questions like this.

As far as things to IMMEDIATELY stop driving for:
Red Temp light
Blinking red temp light
Any dinging or buzzing from instrument cluster

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of any off the top of my head right now.

Edit: Thought of another: Oil pressure light.

No, I NEED to get one. They are just expensive, and I wanna get this repair done first. The ONLY light that is on is the check engine light. So I guess I should be ok. My little guy is my only source of transportation. SO I just didnt wanna further any damage by using it for the next couple of weeks ya know?

Go to an autoparts store and get the car scanned for free. Then you'll get a code (or some codes, whatever the case may be)and you can figure out whats wrong based on that code. Better to have it read and figure it out, then leave the light on and have it be something important.

The owners manual is different from the Bentley. Owners manual should be in your glove box.
