Spare Key is it a dealer only item ???

Hi, I have a new to me 2004 bug that came with only one key so I am looking to get a spare key made. Am I stuck paying the insane dealer prices or is there a locksmith/shop that will charge more reasonable prices ? I checked all the locksmiths in my area and they tell me its dealer only.

I think the locksmiths are telling you right. It is a dealer-only affair, but be sure to shop different dealers!

I went through this last winter when we bought our '06. Dealer prices varied by more than 100%. I think I paid about $100.

Also, try contacting the previous owner if you can. That's where our 3rd (that's right, 3rd) key came from. I tried them first and they produced a valet key but then later (after I'd already had the dealer make a new key ) they found the second key. But the point is, the previous owner might just have it laying in a drawer and would give it to you.
