A key question

So I just bought a blank key from a guy on eBay. He has a regular business selling Beetle and other odd key types. I came a few days ago, and I put it aside. When I opened it this morning, the key was making a rattling noise, like something was loose in the base. I've heard that VW keys have a chip in them that has to be matched to the car in order to start the engine. Is this true? If so, is it likely that the rattling noise I hear is the chip loose inside the base? I'm trying to determine if this is enough of a problem that I need to try and return the key. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it has to match... however, I have heard it's okay if 1 or 2 numbers don't match up with your original key. As for that noise... is the key new? I'm not sure what it could be? Maybe the battery is loose?
