Question Engine/Exhaust Light HELP!!

I've been on the internet for hours scouring for info on this light that just came on. I find info about it but I can't find anyone who actually posted back as to what was wrong!

I own a 2006 New Beetle Convertible. While driving tonight, my car started sputtering and jumping and a warning light came on. The manual says its the "Exhaust Emission" problem light. I see others on the internet call this the "Engine" light. The dealer is a good hour away so I'm hoping someone has some experience with this and what ended up being wrong.

I already tightened the gas cap if anyone suggests that.

Thank you in advance for any help. I'm afraid to drive it right now as it was acting pretty messed up.

There are a myriad of reasons why your NBC could be running rough--with the info you've given there is no way to know. If you want some suggestions other than "take it to the dealer" (you are still under warranty I presume?) then go to your local Autozone--they will pull your codes for free (hoping to sell you parts) and post up the DTC(s) (Diagnostic Trouble Code(s)). Then I'm sure some will have some suggestions.

Unfortunately, I'm no longer under warranty.

I do have an autozone right down the road, so I'll be taking it there in the morning.

I did read somewhere else that I should have it towed due to actually hurting the engine more if it is misfiring. They also said it was probably coils.

No way to really know. Get the codes and we'll see what we can help with.

I don't have a vert or gasser for that matter, is this engine light like the CEL? That could be many things. I've even heard those go on to tell you you have a brake light out. Granted, since your car was running rough, this is probably not the case. Maybe catalytic converter clogged?

Again, codes would be helpful!
