Default Defrost blowing fuse # 5?

My 02 beetle has a problem. Whenever I hit the defrost button, it immediately pops fuse #5. This then turns the EPC and brake light on (the brake sound alarm then goes off as I drive over 5 mph )

The heated seats will not work and I believe the rear defrost never even turns on.

I have done quite a bit of research before posting this. I have heard of other similar situations happening to people but have yet to find a solution posted. I know many ppl suggest a vag com, but I don't have one and in most of the same similar situations, the vag coms did not reveal anything.

My keyless entry still works, so would it be safe to assume that the comfort control module is not the problem??

I am still having this problem. Can anyone comment on this issue? I am thinking maybe its the comfort control module, I think that runs the defroster. It could also be a wire....I dunno... Can anyone please help!

Default Rear window defroster...

In my 99 turbo it shows the rear defrost fuse in position #26 on the under dash fuse panel. It is a 25 amp fuse. It also shows the comfort module's fuse as a 7.5 amp fuse in position #5 on that same fuse panel. There is also a fuse for the heated seats that is located on the lower relay and fuse panel in position #C, no amperage listed. There is also a fuse (15 amp.) on the main fuse panel under the dash in position #44.
I'm assuming that since there are separate fuses for all three functions that the heated seats and rear defrost system are not connected to the comfort module. This sounds like a short circuit some where in either of these two systems that can probably be tracked down with a digital multi-meter.
Our cars can be very perplexing sometimes, especially with all the inter-linked systems.. The #5 fuse is definitely the fuse for the comfort module so perhaps a scan with a VAG-COM scanner would show why the rear defrost is tripping that fuse. Good luck, JK
