Default Can trouble codes be read without a scan tool?

On my Jeep, I can turn the ignition key, "on-off-on-off-on"
and the trouble codes will read out via the odometer.

On my Z28, I can jumper 2 wires on the ODB plug and the
CEL (Check Engine Light) will flash out the trouble codes.
Same thing on my Suzuki 'Busa.

Is there a way to get the trouble codes without using a
scan tool on a New Beetle?

Not to my knowledge. My fiances Honda is able to do that, but not VWs as far as I'm aware.

But you can also get codes read for free at a local auto parts store (Autozone, Advance, etc). So free reading and you get your codes. Post them back here and we can help point you in the direction of what is wrong.

Thanks for the reply SmileyBug.

Actually, it's my understanding that VW owners shouldn't use
a generic scan tool or get free readings from Autozone/etc,
as the codes might not be "correct":

You can get codes from generic readers and from Autozone. They aren't the VW codes, but you can get those codes and the Bentley service manual for VWs has the generic codes (P codes) listed, as well as the VW specific codes. What the generic code readers tell you is wrong may not be correct, but you can cross reference them with a Bentley and find the cause.

A VAG-COM is the best option for scanning a car. A generic scan tool and read and reset many codes, but can't do anything for air bags or a few other things. A VAG-COM also allows you to monitor your car's systems too, and change some settings. Its a valuable tool and basically equivalent to what the dealer has and charges you $90 to scan your car.

But yes, you can use a generic reader or go to an Autozone. Just report back here or buy yourself a Bentley Manual. Its a great tool if you plan on doing any DIY work.
