Unhappy auto transmission lever stuck, wont shift out of park!

After my vehicle sits for several hours, I depress the brake, the light from the parking gauge on the shifter goes off but the gear shift will not move. I have to force it and sometimes it takes five or six times to disengauge and move into drive. Anyone has had this problem? I dont think its the trans, probably a computer switching mechanism or whatever. Help please.

What color is your brake switch?

When you depress the brake, do you hear a relay clicking underneath the dash or the center console? Check to see if your brake lights are coming on. Sounds like a faulty brake light switch, which was a recall issue. The next time it happens try depressing the brake pedal over and over, listen for the relay click and then see if you shift into gear.

When did you buy your car? Do you know the vehicle history?
Have all your recalls been done?

I know, I know... Whoa! WAY too many questions right? The reason that I ask is that.... on my 2003 NB I had this issue and it turned out that it WAS the brake light switch. (BUGSTUFF is right) The brake light switch is a recalled item on our cars. Mine was still under warranty, when it happened, but none the less, the dealer won't charge you for it if it hasn't already been done.

You see it got really, really hard to shift out of park, even with the brake pedal depressed. It got so difficult that at one point, I could not get my car out of park one afternoon. I had to call my husband to come home from the firehouse and rescue me.
That in itself, was not an easy task, because firefighters cannot just come home whenever they want. He ended up forcing it, or something...I don't really remember, but somehow he got it unstuck. In the mean time, I was on the phone with my dealership, flipping out. It is apparently an easy fix. Check it out my friend. Good Luck!
