My son's Jetta same engine 2.0 4 cyl. water pump fell apart at the impeller at only 27000 miles. This is the number one reason for overheating on the 2.0 VW engine. I have four VW's. Number two for overheat I would say is the battery box lid fuse block melts due to corrsion of the fuse block contact fingers then your fans don't come on when commanded by the fan temp switch lower radiator is where that controlling temp switch is. Three the fan switch or the fans. Also to fill the engine with water after a complete antifreeze drain VW is all wet. To do it right and quickly pull the switch in the flange on the left side of the engine block, your right facing aft looking at the engine. There is a clip pull it remove the temp switch in the flange pour in your anti freeze reinstall the temp switch and the clip just don't loose the o'ring on the switch. Then fill the reservoir. Run the engine like five minutes shutoff and let cool, and recheck anti-freeze level. It will need some top off of the reservoir. Then run untill up to operating temperature, let cool and check level again. When working great cars when broke will drive you crazy. Learn how to fix yourself or the dealers will rob you blind. The water pump can be changed with out changing the timing belt if you know you have less than 80k on the belt. When you learn how fix the pump, you can do it in 2 hours. The metal pump from Graf or one of the others seem's at least the impeller won't fall off.

Default Water pump

Does anyone know where to buy a water pump that doesn't have plastic impellers?

Read Post #18, add to that www.ecstuning.com and most any other place that sells waterpumps. I can give you a list of 15-20 web resources if you p/m me.
Prices will probably vary widely so shop around.
