Unhappy Surging like transmission is engaged, trying but not starting

'00 auto NB TDI running B99.

Rolled the car backward out of the garage today (not unusual) and went to turn over the engine and it didn't start. It surges (engine jumps rather drastically) as it turns over but doesn't actually start. The surging feels like the transmission is engaged.

We checked and there are no codes.

Everything has worked up to this point. It does have an oil leak that needs to be dealt with from the black cap over the valve cover ,opposite the oil input in front of the left portion of the air filter hose in the following photo (photo is not mine)http://image.eurotuner.com/f/2484448...tdi+engine.jpg

Ideas appreciated, thank you!

Does the car actually move any? Have you tried putting it in neutral when starting?

If the TC failed catastrophically this could happen, but you would have had some symptom the last time you drove it. Does it sound like the engine is trying to fire at all? How is the timing belt, when was it last done and who did the job?

It doesn't actually move just feels like it want's to put forth the effort while turning over, just never actually starts.

I have tried starting in Neutral.

There have been no prior symptoms. The timing belt was changed as part of the contract for purchase details in 05 just before I purchased it.

(thanks for your assistance! so much for a fun summer day

my fiance says it feels like the transmission is partially engaged so that when the starter turns over you can feel it try to surge forward which is slowing down the sarter enough so that it cannot turn over fast enough.
