Default Catalytic Converter Problem

I own a 99 New Beetle, with 80,000 mi. Last week the catalytic converter went. In 2005 I received a letter from VWoA that the warranty on the converter would be extended due to possible failure to 10 years or 120,000 mi, whichever came first. No recall, just a letter for if and when the converter failed. Now, the dealer wont honor it as it is beyond the 10 year extension. I talked to VWoA and they also denied it. Seems to me a catalytic converter with a known defect should be replaced, period. I'm well within the mileage. I bought the car brand new, I'm the original owner.
Any suggestions? I don't think I should have to repair this myself.

Hello. The same thing happened to me 2 months ago. I found this letter here on the Org. I called VW and they asked for my VIN number. I gave it to them and they returned saying that Ernie's birthday was July 1999, so he is out of warranty. Since we are well into 2010, I'd say it's past. Whatever you decide to do, good luck! OH by the way, I went to a muffler shop and they made me one, complete with the oxygen sensor. It was 200 buck. Good Luck!

You hit 10 years. It was an extended warranty, not a recall so they don't have to replace it. I had mine fail earlier this year as well, at 91k. But my car is also a '99.

It was less than $200 to replace.
