Default Starter engine noise

I have the new Beetle Turbo 2000, made in Mexico in Nov. 1999. It has just 46.000 miles on the clock. I have had noise from the starter engine nearly every time I start the car, a big screech..... The dealer says, "Oh! it's on all the new Beetles" and not to worry. Brother-in-law, Floyd the auto expert says it is the starter engine and something that is ringing out after the starter engine has fired.
Anyone else embarrassed when the starter engine screeches out to the neighbors

Lol. Mine does it too. Unfortunately, it is normal on some early turbo models

The starter on my 2.0 made some noises back in the winter time. Seemed to not like the cold. I was told that the starter is probably dirty and needs to be cleaned up, but its nothing bad. Also would cause no harm to leave it. No issues here, though the sound went away once the weather got warmer.

Problem with Starter noise on New Beetle 2000 Turbo.
The dealer said " they're all like that" but my local mechanic just installed a new Part # 17780SW Reman Starter Motor $265.51 plus labor. Now the car is super, no more screeching when it is started.

Don't tell me, everyone is talking about a standard tranny right? VW issued a Technical bulletin about it wayyy back, the clutch dust goes into the starter and makes it screech. NOT ALL Beetles do that, just 98-2001 manual tranny have the potential to do it. Remedy was to simply blow the dust out with compressed air. VW put a sheild or repositoned the motor so the dust wouldn't go in it in later model years. If you have an auto then there is no screech unless you actually have a starter problem.

You got hosed. There was nothing wrong with your starter. I would have done the whole job for $60. Remove starter, take starter apart, clean, lube, assemble, install. $5 worth of cleaner/grease and about an hour of work.

Later models have the same issue too, as do any other manual VW. In fact, its common in other makes too. Its not really doing any damage as long as it is not excessive...its just annoying.

How do you clean the Starter or at least take out the second bolt that hold it in place?

So what if you actually have a Starter problem? How would you remove the bolt on the bottom of the Starter?
My 02' TDI Diesel runs okay and occasionally doesn't start at times. (I tap on the Starter Cylinoid or get a jumpstart and She's running again.)

It's easy to gain access, however, can't get the bottom bolt out. :-(

Default Relived...

I got so annoyed at trying to take out the second bolt that I put it all back together. My yellow bug seems to have been working fine until she died on me again! Finally broke down and bought a battery, not cheap for a 02' Diesel, $156 with a 10% discount.
