Unhappy Radio broke after Battery changed

I had my 05 New Beetle battery changed in a non-dealership service center couple weeks ago, and CD couldn't be ejected. I just heard from them that "it was a coincidence that radio broke when the battery changed" Is it normal case or because of improper battery replacement? Thanks for answering my question.

If the battery was improperly installed I would think there would be more electronic issues than just a non-functioning radio.

A battery replacement will put the radio into "SAFE" mode; if they tried to correct that and failed, then maybe it is not a coincidence.

This is the exact words they give me after took out my CD,
"It was a coincidence that it broke when the battery changed. There is a gear or something stripped on the inside. Took the tap cover and was able to manipulate the mechanism to get out the cd. The car will need a new radio."
The guy also told me that happens often. Does that really happen often??

Hello

If you believe that (BCPP)

Tell them to shove it

Never heard such nonsense, how is the radio connected to a failure on their part

You know there is a 10amp fuse on the back of the radio right? It blows very easily when something like the battery is shorted briefly. Pull the radio out and look on the back at the fuse to confirm whether or not it is blown. There is alos one fuse in the fuse panel that is associated with sending power to the radio.

X2! This just happened to me last month. I had a battery and alternator replaced while on a trip. I finally got my radio pulled out the 10amp was blown! As soon as I replaced the fuse, I turned the radio on, it said SAFE and then went straight to playing. I didn't even have to code it. It is worth a try and the radio is pretty easy to get out. Here is the link: YouTube - Volkswagen New Beetle Radio Removal Good luck!! Keep us posted.

I had no idea there was an additional fuse on the back of the radio; I learned something new today. I probably have had 5-6 battery changes over the years with the four NB's that I have and neither (knocks on wood) have blown that fuse.

I still can listen to FM radio, but the CD ejection is broken after battery changed. I wonder how much to repair it or replace a new radio for my buggy. The guy told me they charge around $400-600 depending on the electric guy!!!

O.K., so your radio is mechanically broken. It cannot get that way unless someone broke it. They don't magically break. I don't know why but it sounds like when there was no power someone physically tried to eject a cd and didn't know how and broke it. Regardless, the car went into the shop with a working cd headunit now has no cd operation so that would be the basis of any arguement.

My 2000 beetle's radio also failed when the battery was changed at the VW dealership. For reference, the new cassette radio cost me $75 installed at the dealer. Funny thing about electronic devices is the next time you turn it on could be the last.

Just repair. It will take $200 for sending the radio to the electric specialist, and the guy said this situation normally cost about $200 to fix?! I didn't really un what he told me. All I got was at least $400 to fix the original radio by specialist.

It is my understanding that a third party electronics shop cannot repair a stock unit; your only options are, another stock unit from the dealer or an aftermarket unit from whomever you choose. The $400 to $600 is about average for a aftermarket installation.

$400-$600 for an aftermarket unit? Are you talking about at the dealer? I'd say much lower in general. My unit only cost maybe $150 tops (hubby got it for me) and I got free installation from where I got it (Circut City). I'm sure Best Buy and the like would do the same.

I'd probably personally just get an aftermarket unit if you can't get VW to take care of that for free. I have a Sony and its blue and red lighting matches the interior lighting perfectly, and there are many others out there that do. This way you won't have any issues with entering codes when you change the battery, etc.

I found this place when I was looking for a replacement radio because the CD mechanism would not eject the CD. I haven't tried them. Thought I would look local.

OK, I stand corrected, my mistake, if you do it yourself and get budget approved radio, with no speakers, then yes $100-$200 is ball park. I'm tend to lean toward the pricey end, Blaupunkt, Alpine, Denon, etc... and I get a matched set of four speakers to go with it. Unless their installation is free, I do it myself.
