Angry Anyone replaced their torx screws?

Personally I think torx screws are quite possibly the most rubbish invention in the world - ever! They round off so easily and it's always ones which are in a tight or awquard space - which, let's face it, are most of them on a Beetle!

So, has anyone replaced them with something more useful? What was it? I'm thinking of taking a few in to a DIY store to get a few bolt ones which are the same size and pitch.

Quite an interesting statement.

There are basically two types of screws. Those which cam-out and those which don't. On a screw that cams out, the screwdriver will slip out of the head when it's driven to a certain amount of torque. The phillips head is an example of such a screw and it will often get damaged when cam-out occurs, but it's had to over-tighten.

The other type of screw is the one that's designed not to cam-out. There is no "self-protecting" mechanism and that means that you can put basically unlimited torque on them. So first of all the torque level on these screws should be limited in some way, especially when fastening. The other important thing is that the torque should be transferred through as much surface area as possible, because a too small or damaged bit will give less contact area and more easily causing stripped sockets.

I don't know what's in your toolbox when it comes to torx bits, but the torx screw is so much better than the alternatives.
- Phillips cams out,
- Pozidriv is better but easily confused with phillips and will cam out eventually,
- Hex (Allen) could be an alternative but rounds under the same conditions as torx (bad tools, too high torque)

I was trying to undo them

I have a good set of high quality torx bits in my toolbox, but unless you get them on at a perfect angle, they're so easy to round off. It didn't seem to be the torque they'd been done up to which was the problem either, as they all came out with the use of mole grips and not too much effort required.

I have quite bad co-ordination problems, which makes it even worse, so I was going to try and get ones with normal bolt heads.

Where are those torx screws that you were trying to get to, just out of curiosity?

I have found through my years of my Bug that it's not the Torx screws so much as the tools used to undo them. Funnily enough only last week my suspicions were confirmed.

If you use a set of Torx Drivers (Torx screwdrivers) From the 99cents shop (see what i did there ) Then the Torx heads give way a lot more easily than the set of Snap-On's Drivers i got for Christmas last year.

If your using cheap budget Torx drivers, the Torx screw has a stronger head than your cheapness and the head of the screw gives way. Since i've been using the Snap-On set, they've stayed with the head on

Yeah I've found that too, hence why I got some of the Halfords Professional ones. They came out very nicely if I could get the tool onto them straight, but at the bottom of the wings you can't get it on straight (or at least I can't with my crap co-ordination) so it rounds almost instantly.

There are Snap-On tools that you add to your Drivers that enable you to do the angular connections. I have 2 and for one of a better word, they bend around corners )

Adding the Moo horn over and over as well as changing the ICE in Blugg a few times, i've learn't the hard way

P.S. Halfords tools WTF ?!? Invest !! Halfords tools are cheap for a reason

we have some of those - but I can't find them for the life of me

Halfords Professional range have a good reputation and lifetime guarantee - do a search in VZi - they're decent tools. (the cheap ones aren't, but the expensive ones are).

See this is the thing i don't get

Now i know i have Autism But seriously, i'll type on forums what is on my mind Not hide behind protocol, if anyones following my facebook life they'll know.

Online, seen my message but won't reply ??

This is a forum, just like the other 50 or so forums i am a member of, 40+ love me for posting my mind, most find it surreal, or unbelievable that i'll post such stuff that are on my mind.

A simple question i posted to Shamrockez, also like me, born with a silver spoon in her mouth. No money worries, erm, actually maybe i was born with a platinum spoon as i don't have the back-up from my folks to do whatever i want to my Bug. But still, an ignored reply says something to me.

Hiding Lucy, DON'T hide, upset that the Bristol posse will see your answer.

Whatever i say

I wasn't online! I went to bed at 10pm, as I do every night. Your reply was posted after that.

I wasn't blanking you at the BBB - you never came anywhere near me. You said some very nasty things Danny, and my loyalties will always be with Graham.

It's a shame, cos you're a lovely bloke in a real life, who would do anything for anyone, but online, especially after a few drinks, you can be very nasty
