My daughter is driving a 2000 NB in Colorado...we live in Indiana. She flew back from Thanksgiving Sunday and drove back to Colorado Springs in her NB. As she left the Denver airport the front brake pad indicator on the dash came on and stayed on.
I am expereinced in changing disc pads on all types of cars, but my question is this...... I am flying out in two weeks to pick up the car and drive it home (about a 1000 mile trip). She will only drive it about 200 miles between now and then. How worn are the brake pads when the light comes on? There is no squealing from the brakes at this time. I wonder if I have to get them fixed now, or can I wait till I get home......and if I do fix them there....how hard is it? Any unusaul aspects unique to a VW (I've done Ford, Chevy, Pontiac and Hondas before). Considering that I would have to buy or borrow tools and do it outside I'd like to know what people think. Thanks for the replies.... |

The brakes will be fine for quite awhile, the warning lot comes on way too early IMO. I got at least 15k out of mine after the light came on.
Nothing wrong with doing it when you get home with it. They are very easy, nothing any different than almost all modern disc brakes out there. You should replace the rotors at the same time...though I'm sure you already knew that. If/when you do the rear brakes, they do require that the piston be turned as it is being pushed in to retract. The front brakes aren't like this. Some have had luck with a big c-clamp, there is a tool available at metalnerd.com, or you can rent a tool from O'Reilly/Autozone/etc.
