Unhappy Changed ignition switch, won't start

Hello everyone! I used to be diddlebug on here and I forgot my password and since have gotten a new email address so I wasn't able to recover it.

I got rid of my 2000 New Beetle because it was so unreliable and 3 months ago I bought a 2005 black automatic 2.0, I love these cars, I just couldn't stay away.

My ignition switch has went out for a second time, the new switch, which we replaced thanks to the tutorials here, ended up going bad only 2 weeks after replacing it. We got another swtich and replaced it and the headlights, windshield wipers, etc are working again but the car won't start. I noticed as well none of my warning lights on the speedo are coming on. It makes the noise as if it is going to start, just never turns over. We took the switch back out and tested it and the new switch isn't bad.

I was wondering if you all had a suggestion as to what might be wrong, I just can't afford to take it any where to get it fixed now and I will not take it to the Volkswagen dealer here. I had some transmission problems and they thankfully fixed it under the valve body warranty extension but I was also having a problem with the indicators telling you what gear you are in disappearing and reappearing, also the []'s would light up around all gears on occasion, the Volkswagen dealer charged me to fix this and I was on my way home and there was a burning smell, I pulled over and looked and looked in the fuse box and they had ran a wire from somewhere in the dash into the the hole for the fuse for the transmission and the wire got hot and melted. Needless to say I trust myself to fix this car more than I do them at this point.

Any help any one can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I just took a look at it and the plastic on a few of the wires is black and one of the wires is exposed a bit, I didn't really pay much attention to it before but it looks like this is probably the problem! My Dad's friend said that the fuse that controls the speedo isn't getting any fire, it's a 2.5, not sure which slot it is, you think this could be because of the wire harness that the switch connects into?

How difficult is it the replace the wires?
