Hello, im new to the forum. I have had a good read through regarding this problem, it does seem to be a common fault.
I have a 2000 2.0L with 37k miles. The other (wet) day i was driving down the motorway when the blue light started flashing. As this was the first time this happened my natrual reaction was slow down, heaters on full with the window down. Well i made it home ok, opened the bonnet and noticed the fuse cover (on top of the battery) had come loose and was slightly open. I ensured everything was in as it should be and closed the cover, the problem went away. Should i still have this checked at cost even though the light has stoped flashing? 37k seems a bit early for pump probs etc..... Could this be a result of water etc, the engine wasnt particually hot even though it had been running for 2.5hrs at speed. Oh id just like to say this forum is very informative, good work people....... |

Your reaction to the light was one of "the engine is overheating". However, the blue flashing light means there is an electrical malfunction (per the Bentley manual). A red flashing coolant light denotes either overheating or low coolant.
Mine had the same problem and when I hooked up the VAG-COM I noticed the engine temp measuring block stayed at zero even with warmed up. I replaced the sensor for $6 and that fixed the problem. |

I ditto the experience of PorkChop, though I never actually had the temp light flash at me. VAGCOM always read a low temp setting, finally it went to 0. My mechanic said he'd give me to 70,000... if I made it past that he'd do it for free. That was at around 25,000... at 53,000 it went out and threw a Check Engine light about it... so I ponied up $66 and let him fix it. It isn't hard to do yourself -- infact, it only took him 5 minutes to install it. I watched!

Ok...first of all does anyone read the "Owners Manuel"? It tells what the blue light is. Tells when it should go off and tells what you should and should not be doing while it is on. The binder is very usefull. I have read mine cover to cover more than once. It makes good reading and on more than one occasion I have told the dealer the CORRECT answer after quoting the book! Like I said useful! I had the filler cap light come on one time. I had no clue so I pulled over got my book out and took care of it! "Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well">

I've had Chalie for 3 years without a manual or valet key -- without this website I'd be lost. The temp light in a non-flashing blue state means the engine is cold. When the engine is warm the light goes off. If the light flashes blue, that's stage-1 cooling problems. Have the car scanned at a Dealer/VW Service Agent; coolant leak, water pump failure, coolant tempature sensor failure (common), or other coolant-related problems could be occuring. A flashing red temp light = shut engine off IMMEDIATELY. Red = danger. Remember that! And, please, don't hesitate to ask a question -- no question is too stupid. And those who were fortunate enough to buy a new or used VW with a book should scan and upload them in PDF format for those of us who haven't sunk the $50-$70 for a replacement.... then your arguement of "READ THE FREAKING MANUAL" might be plausible for everyone!! ![]() edit: at 8:01am with little sleep (deprived by dreams of staining my deck and somehow part of my new living room IS painted even thought we went to bed last night... hmmmmm) I did not see that wawalker also said that some NB owners didn't get manuals... which is more the case in my area. The dealerss purposefully do not resell the car with the manual -- that's money in their pocket if the concerned owner actually wants it. Instead, they play mind games and tell you to come in every 10,000 for service... then fail to do the proper services (like TDI Timing belts at 60,000).... in hopes they can help you lock up your engine and make another sale. |

PM me...I'll scan mine or let you know any info you may be interested in. Mine justs sits in the glove box and gets dusty anyway...
Maybe that's because my dad told me once that "real men don't read instructions!" ![]()
