My dealer just told me that my airbag light is caused by driver's buckle.

I asked if I fixed it myself if the light will go off and he said No.

You'd likely need the code reset when it comes to the airbags, which can be done with VAG-COM.

Today was to be the day of truth! My 3rd party cable had arrived, I downloaded VCDS Lite, and went to work to reset the airbag light on our NB. I was able to do just that according to VCDS, but then it came on again. Now it says my passanger side seat belt switch has to high a resistance and the light come right back on.

I inspedcted it when I had the seats out and could find no evidance of damage to any of the wires, so this time I think it is something internal.

Guess I am off tomorrow to buy another seat buckle and get that installed. Should not be a very hard job. So provided my local stearlership has one in stock I will update again tomorrow night.

Jackpot!!! Mama brought home the new passenger side seat belt buckle. I of course installed it right away. Fired up the laptop with VCDS Lite, plugged in my 3rd party cable, and proceeded to reset the code. Worked like a champ.. Done in just about 30 minutes.

For those with this issue VW only wanted about 85.00 for the passenger seat belt buckle.... Not an expensive repair really.

Mama is thrilled the light is out, the system is safe and operable....

Thanks to all of you who pointed me in the right direction.

Behold the power of VCDS and your willingness to do the repair yourself; here is to many more "fixing" things on your vw and being able to NOT get ripped by your local VW dealer! Good job!

What VAG-COM cable did you get off Amazon? Will this one work?

I think this is the one I bought http://www.amazon.com/OBD2-Diagnosti...7944677&sr=8-1 But I see no reason the one you posted wouldn't work. Now I can only speak from my experiance, for mine the disk they sent me would not read in my computer, so I had to do some searching for a driver to install. It may have worked with out it I never tried. I just found a driver and installed it, and followed the directions from Ross Tech on the VCDS Lite and worked like a charm.

Thanks! Just bought yours since it was cheaper and they appear to be the same thing.

Congrats to your success.
I got the same light on two days ago.
I am wondering if you read the error with this cable from Amazon, using the VCDS Lite (free?). Or did you have something else for reading codes, vag-com? I can't afford the vag-com, but really need to read the error code and fix the problem. I am afraid the airbag explodes on my face on a highway.

And any link to the cable driver? Thanks.

From my understanding; the air bags are NOT going to deploy when there is a error in the system (air bag light on). The worry would be (to me); that you will not be protected by the air bag system if you get in a accident. From a a safety view point; you shouldn't drive the car, until you get the problem fixed asap (in a perfect world I know). Basically, you can be putting your life on the line; can you put a price on safety, a life or permanent bodily harm? Bottom line: you need to get it repaired and be safe; pay someone to fix it or buy the tools, parts... do it yourself. Fix it and be safe, prevent a potential catastrophe! Good luck!
