Default Fuel Gauge Problems

My wife's beetle (2003), is having problems with the fuel gauge. It reads accurate when it is full up until it hits 3/4 full, when it will just drop to E. It hops back to being accurate around 1/2 and then drops out again. I'm guessing a loose connection somewhere, but the consistency of the gauge drop is concerning. Any ideas?

Could be something in the tank affecting the sensor.

Like the fuel pump? When I switched mine out after dropping the fuel tank, it did crazy things at first (like the needle on the cluster wouldn't move when I turned the key on, then it would be inaccurate, and now it works fine).
