Default It takes FOREVER to fill the car up

My wife has had her Beetle for a couple of years now. I took it for a drive last night...had to get gas.

I had to fill the car up so damn slowly because the auto stop mechanism on the pump handle kept shutting off the fuel flow. I watched it happen...i start the fuel, put the latch down and it would shut itself off after only a few seconds. It kept looking like the fuel wasn't flowing smoothly into the tank...it would back up and i'd get a little fuel leaking inside the cap. It took me at least 5 minutes to fill up the stupid tank.

Press lever...fuel flowing slowing...click (fuel handle shuts off fuel flow)...repeat...repeat...repeat.

I thought it was the gas station or the particular handle, but I get home and my wife tells me this has been happening for "almost a year" !!!!

It seems like the fuel just doesn't flow smoothly and creates back pressure.

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

I've seen this on here before, and the fix was the purge valve. Volkswagen New Beetle 1.8T > Engine > Emission > ES#257161 Vent / Purge Valve - 1C0906517A. They are specific to engine codes, so make sure you get the right one.

Have you had it scanned? Post the codes here.

My car for whatever reason doesn't like Quik Trip pumps. Takes forever to fill up. If I go to the janky but ethanol-free gas stations, it fills up just fine.

Difficult to fuel / fill up the car?

Mine has done that since the day I got it.

Have to let it flow slow otherwise it will just click off.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I'll take it to get the codes read and post back. Is the purge valve something that can be replaced without taking it to shop by someone with some working auto repair skills?

Rest assured, you have a problem, it IS NOT normal. I have had three NBs. Fuel flows full speed into tank under correct conditions. There are some new pumps out there where the fueling nozzel won't operate properly at certain angles (possibly the cause of Oh Randi's problem at Quik Trip). Let us know if changing the purge valve solves your problem.

I had this problem sometimes, but not always. Seemed to be at certain stations and not others. But I almost always couldn't go to the full speed no matter what. Was like that for as long as I can remember and no codes thrown. I tend to leave the pump at the first click anyway no matter what. I had a pump overfill and pour gas all over the side of my car so I tend to want to let it pump slower vs. faster and stand near the car when its close to being full.

There so many problems with my car that this is the least of them. When I finally save up and fix one thing two other things decide to flake out.

I'm deciding if all this money being dumped into the car is even worth it or if I should start thinking of getting out from under it.

Right now I'm looking at pissing away my income tax refund on fixing the vents spewing out fabric, no ac, weak heat (maybe all related to venting but I doubt it) and the ESP system flaking out once a day making me almost run off the road unless I remember to turn the system off when I crank it.

The other issues present would take another post to fill. Its a bottomless money pit. This car is not a VW but rather a cheap inferior Mexican product daring to wear the VW badge.
