Default Blinker problem

So I have a question. My friend has an '02 Turbo, and the turn signals turn on about once, and then turn off. Same with the hazard lights. It was first noticed after her dad replaced one the headlights. I checked the fuse, and the fuse is fine, and the same problem exhibits itself when I put in another fuse into the spot (I think it's #38). Anyway, My guess is that there is a cable that is not plugged in all the way somewhere, but I checked in the engine compartment and couldn't see squat (first time I've looked under a VW hood). So if you could point me exactly where to look, or if you have any other ideas, I'd be highly appreciative. Thanks.

Sounds like the hazard switch has failed. It has been happening in some New Beetles. The hazard button that you push to turn the hazards on is the control module for the signalling and hazard system. You just pop it out and unplug it, then just put a new one in. You could put a tester on its contacts to see if the circuits open and close but it is likely that component, its unrelated to the headlights probably just coincidental.

Hmm. Thanks for the idea. I shall have to take my multimeter with me to test it. How would one go about removing it?

You just pry it from its bottom edge and work it out with your fingers, you don't need tools for this. It will eventually pull out into your hand and just reach behind and unplug the connectors.

Yup, that was it. She took it to the VW place and they replaced the hazard switch under warranty.

Thanks guys.
