If the result was "error" that does not mean there are no codes. Sounds like your scanner isn't working with the car. You can start next by going to Autozone or similar and seeing if they can scan the car. If not, you probably need someone with VAG-COM.
Don't go changing the gas cap unless you KNOW its the culprit. You need the codes first though.
