Default Play in Steering Wheel

Ok. So I have fixed two things and they seemed to help a bit. I started out with about an inch in play in the steering wheel. Changed both outer tie rods and driver's side ball joint (had this done when they did the alighnment). They said the passanger side ball joint was good. That took care of some of the play but I still have about a 1/2 inch play. My husband thinks it's the pitman arm and my Haynes manual suggests the gear box. I don't have any shimmy going down the road and it doesn't pull to one side. I am at a loss as to where to go next. I just got this car a few weeks ago and it wasn't taken care of very well by it's previous owners.

How about the Lower control arm bushings? They are known to go bad and need to be replaced. Replace them with the More Heavy Duty Audi TT solid bushings. That will tighten up the steering quite a bit.
