Default ABS Light on - 2000 VW Beetle

I have a 2000 VW Beetle auto with about 118K and the ABS light has been coming on and off recently.

Please let me know if you know the root cause of this intermitten issue. Also, how much should I expect to get it fixed at an independent vw shop?

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the brake pads?

It's very likely a faulty ABS wheel speed sensor but scanning for codes would be the best way to narrow it down.

Red face 2000 New Beetle with the same problem!

I too have the same problem. I just got my 2000 New Beetle 2.0 Automatic with a little over 100,000 miles on it back from replacing the starter and within 24 hours the ABS light has come on. I had new rear brakes in January and front brakes last July. Also replaced a rear caliber in September. Now what...HELP!

Off the top of my head I would scan it for codes first and go from there.
