Default 2.0L engine pics???

I was looking at a few pics of other beetles and realized mine doesn't look the same as the other 2.0L's I'm seeing. Mine is a 99 and I'm missing the engine cover so I'm not sure if it's really different or not. I saw a pic of a 2000 and the oil filler isn't even in the same place.

Anyone have pics of the various engines without their covers?

Really? Is it possible mine has had the 2.0L swapped out for the 1.8T? I wouldn't mind but it will make getting parts a bit tricky...

What makes you think you ever had a 2.0l in that car? Looks original to me.

What is your VIN number? You should be able to look it up by that.

Here is a Link to a VIN Decoder:

Free VIN Decoder - Vehicle Identification Number Report

If your 5th Character of Your VIN Number is a D then your car always had a 1.8 If your 5th Character of Your VIN is a C then you originally had a 2.0

Yep. Looked it up and the 5th character is a "D"...I have the 1.8T

Thanks for the info. I was told when I bought it that it was the 2.0L. In fact there is a sticker inside the owners manual that says 2.0L but after examining it more closely the VIN doesn't match my car so the engine is original...it's the owners manual that isn't. lol

That honestly makes me quite happy since the turbo is what I really wanted to begin with. I wondered why it seemed just as fast as my wifes 07 bug with the 2.5L

Now the question is would you like it to feel and be faster than your wife's lowly 2.5L

Good to hear you have a 1.8T. Great engine! If you thought you had a 2.0, what fuel have you been using?

Oh yeah...you bet. My plans have changed for this car as of now. I'm almost embarrassed that I didn't know it was the turbo...but there is no badging on the car to indicate the 1.8T

On to do some more reasearch

Thanks. I just thought about that after looking thru the manual. I've been using the low octane stuff which will change as of today. Time for some fresh 91 or better.

You gas flap should have had a label indicating only to use 91 or better Octane gasoline? On a stock Beetle it isn't really super crucial. It has Dual Knock sensors and the ECM will automatically retard timing and reduce performance if there is any indication of any detonation/knock. So you should be safe but for best performance use at least 91 Octane. Lucky for us in Indiana all our premium is 93 Octane except for Gas America and Kroger Grocery Store Gas Stations. They are selling 92 Octane gas which I am trying to avoid.
Probably from adding more Ethanol. Well, most all gas station use gas with 10% Ethanol in it. They are no longer required to put it on the pumps since October of 2010. The governmentis pushing for 15% standard Ethanol in gasoline. This makes gasoline cheaper but it also reduces gas mileage and it harms engines that aren't set up for running Ethanol like some of the Flex Fuel vehicles are. (E85) I have an Impala with Flex Fuel capabilities and I used it once just to see. Sure it's a little cheaper gas but my gas mileage dropped almost 35%. No Thanks! Out of 115,000 Gas station in this country only about 4500 of them still offer "Pure" gasoline. That is just around 4% and the numbers are dwindeling. You can go here to see if you have any gas stations still in your area that serve the "Pure" Stuff!
Ethanol-free gas stations in WI

E10 or 10% Ethanol decreases your gas mileage between 4 and 10% and does dry out seals in your engine. Something the government doesn't tell you about.

Good to know. I honestly never bothered to read the back of the gas flap.

I knew the ethanol hurt mileage I'll see if I can find some of the good stuff. I know we have 92 down here but I'm not sure if I can get anything higher than that. I never paid attention since all my other rides run fine with the cheap stuff. I'm not crazy about the ethanol especially since it dries things out.

91 is just fine. Don't worry about 92 if it is hard to find in your area. The bug will be happy with 91
How many miles do you have on the car? Was the timing belt/water pump changed yet? If not I would make that my priority. That is the number one killer of 1.8 or 2.0 engines. Since we have interference engines once the belt goes the valves and pistons will meet and not in a good way. Lucky your wife will never have to worry about that. Her 2.5 has a Timing Chain that never needs changing. Unfortunately our cars will need the belt replaced about every 75k miles or 6 years whatever comes first.

There's no getting around the ethanol thing anymore.Stations get a tax credit for it, even though they can't get anything but that. It does dry out plastic and rubber eventually. The gas itself is actually lower octane now cause the ethanol has a higher octane level. So for an example, 89 octane is actually 84 gas with 10% ethanol, which brings it up to 89. Plus ethanol is drawn to water, so if the station you got gas at happens to have water in the tank, or your car has some amount of water in it, the ethanol will go to the bottom with the water. That's why I don't go to small stations that only get loads once a week or more. Sucks huh?
That is cool you got more than you thought with the 1.8t, that must of been a nice surprise!

Here in Florida the last govner in his vast knowlege of everything mandated 10% ethanol in all gas. There are no stations selling over the road 100% fuel. Milage is down and repairs are up. In addition ethanol from corn drives up you food costs. ( cattle feed goes up, meat goes up etc.)

Ethanol makes no sense at all...did you know that it takes as much as 1 1/2 gallons of gas to produce 1 gallon of ethanol?

The car has 117K miles. The previous owner claimed the timing belt had been done but I don't fully trust that so I'm going to change it along with the water pump and tensioner. I was going to order the stuff a few days ago but I found that the short shifter I want is on backorder so I waited. Lucky thing since I would've been ordering parts for the wrong engine.
