Friend looking at used Beetle. Known issues to look out for?
Hello,
As title states, a friend is looking at a used Beetle. Stats: 2001, GLS, 5-speed, 81'000 miles. The car seems to be in sound mechanical and physical conditions. What are known issues with this year/trim we should look for? Any there any common points of failure/recalls we should investigate? Last but not least, what is the common, average price (approximation - to get an idea) for the aforementioned vehicle, assuming it's in good conditions (mechanically sound and good overall body/interior)? Thank you in advance for the advice.

First thing to check is whether or not the timing belt/water pump have been replaced. Do you know which engine is in the car?
