Default replacing low-beam/driver headlamp driver's side 2009

Hey all.

My drivers/low-beam headlamp went out. Went to Advance Auto and bought the light, they wouldn't install but I figured hubby could do it no prob. He's having trouble understanding how, the drivers side is hard to access the lamp.

All service stations are telling me they're going to charge me $40 approx. to switch it out, which if it's supposed to be so easy, is a complete rip off. Plus we have read they go out more frequently on the Beetle than on other cars, may as well learn how to change it ourselves, especially if it's easy to do.

We found the thread with step-by-step pictures for replacing the light in the 2006 but I was wondering if it was terribly different for the 2009? Please advise. We're going to try to do this ourselves. Thanks!

OK, I just had a VM message from the service dept. at my local VW dealer who told me I had to have a "special tool" to get the driver's side headlight out and there was a lot of machinery to get past and it would cost $60 in labor.

Is this true? Do you need a special tool?

The "special" tool is a long extension for the rachet wrench. You shouldn't have any problems. I've done our '08 and they should be the same set up as the '06. Good luck.

Thank you.

I just feel like I'm being completely ripped off. "Special" tool my foot. I'm kind of ticked about this and makes me want to become a mechanic.

Will print out the detailed instructions and talk to the hubs tonight and will post a follow up once we get it done. I'd like to think we at least tried it.
