I'd think it would be easy to find a whole visor and just replace it versus trying to get a new mirror in. There are many people parting out their old Beetles.

I suppose if you had a glass shop do a perfect cut you could glue a new one on???? Now I want to know if I can add homelink to my beetle that way. Has that been done? :-) Sent from my iPhone using AutoGuide.com App |

There are several ways to add Homelink to our Beetles. First and easiest is to get the correct sun-visor with Homelink feature. Just remove old visor and plug in the new one. Secondly, which I have done, is just add a Homelink module in or under the dash with a remote push-button.
On my repair I just may try the stick-on outside rearview mirror to repiar it. |

From the wiring diagrams that I have seen, the Homelink wiring, which is just 12V and ground, is available at the vanity light switch internal to the visor. eBay is a good source for a visor with Homelink. Just be patient when looking for one, they come from cheap to steal pricing. Condition is key.
I have been looking for almost two years for a tan/cream convertible visor with Homelink, then it had to have a broken mirror. |

Just attempted to install my new Homelink sunvisor and found that the power connectors are different to my surprise. Two pin vs three pin on the Homelink visor. Now I need a new connector so I can tap into the 12 volts at the vanity mirror light.
I was under the belief that the wiring was Homelink ready in all cars, not so! Bummer! I will get it working. |

Looking at the Bentley wiring diagram, I may have to get the switched 12 Volts from the rear view/clock area. There is no 12 Volts at the visor's connector, just a switch circuit for the vanity light. I'll be making a trip to the local salvage yard this coming week.

Got it done. I will post a separate thread later on a how-to to replace a Homelink visor in a non Homelnik car. Simply put, get the 3-pin connector (to match the Homelink visor's connector) either new or from a salvage yard with as much pigtail as possible. Cut off the 2-pin connector in the car. On the three pin pigtail, cut the brown and brown/white (or brown/blue) wires to about 2 inches but leave the black/red full length. Splice these two wires to the two in the harness watching color code. Try to keep the harness length the as the 2-pin. The black/red is connected to the 12V side of the vanity light wire probably a red/blue wire. If the black/red isn't long enough to reach just splice in additional wire.
The Homelink module only draws current (50ma) when a button is pushed. More details and a picture or two later. |
