Question Maf

I read that the MAF would cause my 98 Beetle to lose power and give me a hard time starting. These are the exact simptoms the car is having now. The check engine light is also on. What causes the MAF to go bad ? Is there something I should be doing to extend its life cycle ?

You could try cleaning it. Put it in a baggy w/some isopropyl alcohol. Or use some electrical contact cleaner.

You could unplug it and see if your starting/loss of power symptoms go away. Yes it'll cause CEL's, but this is a diagnostic proceedure, not a solution. If that fixes it try to fix the sensor; but most likely you'll need to blow $50 on the sensor.

What is the MAF? I ask because I've had slight trouble starting; well, just a noise, really, that happens when it's cold. But it's still something I'd like to check. I'll refer to the Bentley.

When I unpluged it the engine seemed to run a little wierd, I can drive the car without it being plugged in ?? Your saying I can just replace the sensor in the MAF ? I priced a new MAF and it costs over $200 dollars.

Guys, remember that VW extended the warranty on the MAF to 80,000 miles because of all the faulty units. If they scan it and it throws a MAF related code,it will be replaced at no charge to you.
