Default Problem with the heater

The problem I am having is that my heater won't turn off. The fan works fine and the vents are clear. However, the heat stays on no matter where my temperature setting is at. I am hesitant to bring it in to the shop if it's just a minor problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as the where I should start looking? Do you think it's a problem to be driving with the heater on all the time, aside from the fact I am sitting in a puddle of sweat each time I drive!
