The price will vary somewhat by year. I pruchased a use NB that only came with the vallet key. Dealership is quoting me $325 for a new remote with key programmed and cut. So yeah, it can be expensive.

Be sure to mention this to the seller. Either have them knock some off the price or get a working remote w/ key before buying it.

Yes, this is a serious concern. My beetle can with one remote key, but since I have a history of locking my keys in the car (once I even locked the keys in the car with the car running ) , I NEEDED to have a extra. It cost me $345 at my local dealer. Get the issue worked out before you buy the car.

This and not getting an owners manual are 2 of the most common items missing when buying a Beetle. You can get keys and remotes from www.keylessride.com. When I bought mine, I got 1 key with a remote. I bought a remote and a blank off eBay for $65 and thankfully, Riverside VW cut the key for me at no cost (though some dealers charge up to $35 to cut the key). If memory serves me right, models earlier thaan 2001 did not have programmable keys, another issue I didn't have to deal with.
