Exclamation No Warning Alarms

I just purchased a used 2001 Beetle GLS. I don't have any warning alarms. The alarms do not work for the seatbelts or the lights left on or the key left in ignition. Does anyone have a clue what this could be?

The same thing happened to me when I bouthe mine. I didn't even realize it untio some asked me if the buzzer drove me crazy when I left my lights on. I took it to the dealer and because it was certified used they fixed it. They had to replace the entire itstrument cluster. Now I have all of the annoying dings and buzzers, but atleast I don't leave my lights on anymore.

Instrument cluster is probably bad. Do you have any kind of a warranty from the purchase of the car? 30, 60, 90 days? Everything is probably working for the car but if the cluster is bad, you may not get warnings that you really need.

My car has NEVER beeped at me from day 1 about a seatbelt. It displays the seatbelt light at startup for about 3 seconds and goes away, every other VW MarkIV I have seen does this too unless the owner modified the ECU with a VAGCOM.

Do the interior lights come on when you open the driver door? I'm less likely to think you need a new cluster and more likely need a new door latch mechanism (because mine went out, and I don't beep with the key in the ignition, lights on, etc b/c of a $15 microswitch hidden inside the door locking mechanism that's worn out... the dealer replaces the whole locking mechanism for like $300-something, or a weekend DIY would be about $25).

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Fortunately my car is under a 60 day warrenty.I was hoping it would be something simple like a fuse. I will let you know what the diagnosis is.
