Default Roswell 2011 - Date Poll

Earl has asked me to start a Poll for the date for 2011. That way we can set the date early enough to start promoting the show.

It will be dubbed Roswell - National New Beetle Convention.

As most of you know, at this year's Roswell we held a vote to continue coming to Roswell every two years. Since it will be on the Odd years it will coincide with Roswell's UFO anniversaries.

The City of Roswell is behind the show and is open to any date, just warn that if we get too close to the UFO Festival (like this year) that we might not get much response from retailers and citizens of Roswell...since the UFO Festival has priority for the city.

That being said...there has been much discussion on "The List" and "The Org" about the date. There seems to be a favorite shaping up, but here is where you can vote on your choice so we can tally all in one location.

Dates to keep in mind...
Father's Day weekend was historically the weekend for the R2K Show (Roswell for those that don't know that term)
Roswell's UFO Festival - 1st weekend in July this year
Tail of the Dragon Cruise - 1st Saturday in May...this looks to be shaping into an annual New Beetle Event
Memorial Day Weekend - 30th of May
Labor Day Weekend - 5th of September

Things to consider...or not...Schools, Heat..Holidays...

I'll go first since I suggested one of the dates. I chose June 9-12th for several reasons.

The main reason for this date is weather. It should be somewhat cooler at this time. I make no promises because we are so unpredictable in this part of the US. We can be hot one day and freezing cold the next. None of us can control the weather so we have to find a happy median. If you want really cool in Roswell, then you would have to do the event in March/April/early May or late fall. Since these are school times, I don't think it will ever happen during those times. For the summer months, early June is the most preferrable. Once you past the summer solstice, the heat sets in big time.

Several years of the show being on Father's day proved that a lot of people wouldn't attend.

Memorial Day weekend - many schools are still in session or it is graduation time. This is also a big family oriented weekend. I don't think it would be well attended.

The same would apply to Labor Day weekend.

Any other time is just going to be hot.

I think you might have more folks attend if it is on a holiday weekend ( like Memorial Day) It means there is one less day of vacation that would need to be taken.

I said Memorial Day weekend, but I forgot about the Dragon being only 3 weeks prior to that. Hmm...I like the June 9th idea (although that's my brother's birthday...he may give me some heck for it) Oh well! So either one of those two weekends work for me.

I know we had some hassel on the ToD because it was mother's day weekend. I think that kept some people from coming, I don't know if father's day would do the same for Roswell. Just a thought.

I chose June 9th-12th because I am in college still and any weekend before that will conflict with school and I just can't do that, holiday weekends are spent with family so I would have a difficult time deciding whether to go or not

My vote (and I hope it is the date) is June 9th-12th

June 9-12 for me, too. May is a terrible month for me at work, and I likely wouldn't be able to take the time off at the end of may prior to Memorial day.

I also voted for June 9-12. I don't have a conflict with Memorial Day or school so I voted for the date that I think would work best for others. It's a little earlier but also closer to the ToD. I will just need to request both dates off well in advance.

I vote for.... December 30th cuz it's my birthday... actually I can barely breath when it gets above 80* no matter the humidity. This was the reason I bowed out the first few years. I fear the heat. So unless it's done over the winter months. Im out.

only thing that would remotely be a conflict for me would be ToD, and not really even that since it's less than a tank of gas away and with my work schedule I don't have to take off any time from work to attend either. so, whatever everyone else picks is good with me.

June 9-12 works for me. My holidays are usually big family events. The 9-12 is plenty of time for me to regroup from the Tail Of The Dragon and be ready for Roswell.

June 9-12 works for us. I think it's good to miss the holiday highway traffic. And you are right, Al. We'll have time to rest up from slaying the Dragon.

Friday June 3rd thru Sunday June 5th.

Not sure why the poll skips this weekend after Memorial Day, I would think it would be cooler and not be the holiday.

i went for early June. the weekend after memorial day weekend would be fine, too.

i'm wary of doing it on a holiday weekend. i think there are more people who will have family conflicts than people who cannot take one more day of vacation. it's also the weekend of the bugout in VA which will be a conflict for at least one of my favorite bug friends, possibly others.

another important point to raise is that the later it is in june, the closer we are to the UFO festival, which increases the size of the town by around 20,000 people. the Roswell Main Street business association is telling us that the closer we are to that weekend, the more the local businesses will be unable to pay us much attention - case in point, the Starbucks closed for renovation.

i think that's why we didn't get the attention we're used to this year.

I am with Spacegrrl on this one, Bugout is a tradition among a good portion of us East Coasters...even if your car isn't show ready, its almost like a mini family reunion. I'm also in the camp where its hard to get days off of work on a holiday because of low seniority...and Maria graduates in May as well...
