Hey, rather new here so pardon any faux paux but I can't seem to locate any info about R2R 2011 that isn't over a year old. Is this event still on?

It is definitely still on. If you go to the top "Important" thread listed under "Roswell2K" the thread entitled "Roswell-National New Beetle Convention - June 9,10,11,12th 2011" is current. The last message posted there was a week or so ago. Let me know if I can be of any help. If you can make it, I'll be looking forward to meeting you.

Thumbs up

Thanks! Stupid me didn't think to go to the LAST page.... I'm excited and love the graphic of the NBs getting abducted. I will be coming from Northern California and hope to stop in Arizona and Utah on the way going or coming home. Might travel with my passive-aggressive parrot too if I can find motels that will permit her.

Just got a call from Best Western the host hotel will not be open yet the weekend of Roswell in June. Will have to see what Earl`s backup plan will be. She canceled the reservations I had for June 9-10-11.

Plenty of other hotels in town! I'm sure we'll figure out something soon.

We, at Best Western International, are contacting you today in regards
to your reservation at the Best Western Sally Port Inn & Suites in
Roswell, NM for an arrival of June 8, 2011.

The hotel has contacted our office and advised us that they have been
closed for the last year due to water damage, and while they hoped to be
re-opened sooner, they do not foresee re-opening until after July 31,
2011. For this reason they have requested the assistance of our office
in contacting the guests with reservations during this time. They wish
to extend their apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you but
unfortunately they will not be able to accommodate you for this
reservation and we do need to cancel it.

Please contact our office at 800-528-1238 and reference file number
110112-7706, or you may simply respond to this email, so that we may
confirm this cancellation with you.
At least they have an explanation for the closure.

Any suggestions for a Host Hotel? Earl is going to call around and see what sort of a deal he can get.
I like the Fairfield Inn, but don't know if we can get similar pricing, they are a little more expensive and newer than the Sally Port.
- just checked, they don't have a banquet room and kitchen - D'oH! They have meeting rooms though.

I just got the call. The lady told me she was having to leave lots of messages but is going down the list notifying folks. I told her the word was out and the NB folks would all be aware of the situation soon. Doesn't change anything for me, just time for plan B.

The Sally Port always had some kind of hiccup happening, but how do you close a business for over a year?

Sorry I have been late in responding. I have talked with the Sally Port (which is a Best Western) and they sod that due to water damage in a few rooms that Best Western has told them that they should remodel and revamp all the rooms. The new furniture that Best Western guys want takes too long to get for them to open by June (probably late July). I have talked with both the Sally Port and to Best Western and it turns out there is another Best Western just up Main St. from the Sally Port. I have called them to see if we can get discounts similar to what the Sally Port was giving us. They are checking if they can give us discounts and have not called back yet. Their normal rate is $70 for a single and $75 for a double (no suites). I will try to call the Fairfield tomorrow and see if they can give us a deal. I had reserved 50 rooms at the Sally Port, but could change that, up or down, if I did it a month ahead without any penalties.

The Sally Port tells me that the banquet room and catering is still available for Saturday night, June 11th. This is good news as I am not aware of any other rooms that is any where close to cost effective where we can have 100 to 150 people. I will check again with my contacts in Roswell to see if another place might be available as something new may have been added in the last year (they are growing).

Bottom line is - What do you guys want to do? Try a more expensive (maybe) Fairfield or the other Best Western? Or do you want me to look for other accommodations? Being on Main St. and North of the UFO Museum would be best if we want to have a light parade down the the UFO on Friday evening.

Please tell the internet sites that I am sorry for the bother and that we are working it and will get back with everyone once we decide what to do.

Thanks.

I would say go for the other Best Western. I think it is close to Sally Port (need to check the map to be sure) and that would make if convenient if we do get to use Sally Port's banquet room.
The other Best Western is the El Rancho Palacio and their website is: BEST WESTERN El Rancho Palacio, Roswell New Mexico

p.s. Just checked the addresses and they appear to be nearly "across the "street" from each other.

Yes, they are almost across the street from each other. I am good with wherever the group wants to stay as long as we are in the same place. More fun that way.

My only concern with the other Best Western is that I think it's an older hotel. All outside rooms, and the AC units may not be up to snuff (don't forget it gets HOT in Roswell!). Speaking for myself, I'd be willing to pay a little more for a more modern hotel.

No Motel 6, PLEASE?!
I remember visiting Sue Hester (I was staying at the Fairfield Inn)- they had issues with the air conditioners and no internet access.

I know that Jacob has stayed at that Best Western before, but I think it was because it was a little cheaper than the Sally Port (when it was still a Holiday Inn)...cheaper because it was older - as Cameron said.

I think the Fairfield is the last hotel on the strip before you get to down town - so it would be closer...just wonder what kind of pricing they could give us.

Please tell me some motels have smoking rooms. I will not stay in a nonsmoking motel. Fairfields, for example, are owned by Marriott, which has a total 100% nonsmoking policy.
