VW tops sales in Europe

Volkswagen is still Europe's bestselling car brand, the Peugeot 207 is the most popular car andGermany is the biggest market - those are the headline results from the latest market analysis by research firm JATO Dynamics.

European new car sales fell by 1.8 percent (22,742 units) during April, when compared to the same month last year. The year-to-date figure is also down slightly.

VW is the number-one brand, followed by Renault, Opel/Vauxhall and Ford. Peugeot's strong performance with the 207 supermini helped it maintain fifth spot.

For individual models, the big climbers during April were the Renault Clio (eighth to second), VW Golf (seventh to third) and the Fiat Punto (sixth to fourth).

Despite the slump in its new-car market, Germany recorded the highest sales in April with 264,871 units sold. This is a significant change in fortunes for a market which has suffered in recent months. Italy took second place, followed by France, the U.K. and Spain.
