The convertible looks pretty cool, the hatchback it is a bit diasppointing. It does not look really like a beetle though. It lacks the curvy lines that made beetles ... beetles.

And ... looks like we are going to become the new pain in the butt of the new-new-beetle buyers, just like some aircooled owers were when the new-beetle came out.

I'd have to see it in person. I didn't like the pics of the CRX when it came out either and I kept that for 22 years
I agree with Bill, if you have to put a beetle badge on it then it ain't no beetle

I cringe whenever VW's California design team gets involved in anything.

This thing looks like it has even less room for the rear passengers. It doesn't look like a Beetle at all. Looks more like a modern version of the Scirocco. In fact it looks better as a Scirocco than the actual IROC concept they came up with.

Well, if it's not due until 2010 that gives us plenty of time to see TSI and Bluetec engines in the current version.

Am I the only one who thinks it looks amazing?! I think it looks similar to a C230 Kompressor, which I would gladly own!!!

Well, I for one, highly doubt that will be the next New Beetle. VW isn't stupid. They aren't going to change the design of it so drastically.

They did a wonderful job coming up with a New Beetle, keeping the design queues of the original. To put that much effort into, I can't imagine they would ruin it by completely changing it to something different.

There's no doubt in my mind that those are nothing more than drawings that will never come to be.

I like it, but not as a bug. It can only be a bug if it's a big round bubble.

Time for my recurring rant: If VW does anything to the New Beetle, it should be a New Karmann Ghia.

When I hit the lottery, I'm going to have a R8 in Boyd Coddington's shop so fast it will make your head spin. Unless VW beats me to it.

P.S. They changed the survey on beetle-forum.de. There are only three questions now

Wow, a real leap forward: 17.81%
Feh, I don't like it: 72.60%
Nobody is interested in it except the Americans: 9.59%

If it doesn't look like 60% of a round ball; I won't like it.

It might be nice as another car; but it should avoid those 'sedan ' AND 'coupe' AND 'hatchback' lines as much as possible.

If you have to tell what it is, it's not a Beetle. It's that simple.

The NB and NBC combined sell a lot more in the US than Golf and Gti combined, so there is no need in this market to make the NB more like an ordinary European 2-door hatchback.

Boy i agree. That is not a beetle. it's too much of a sports car, not the quirky, useful, innovative, joy-to-drive people mover that it should be. I loved the old bug and bus designs; a clean and simple palette you could use as is, or modify into something screaming or wierd. I wish the new NB would offer the option of a hybrid or electric, too, but above all, i hope it's not that sciroccomazdafocus thing.

How is my Ringo supposed to make fun of my sister's focus if they are going to turn beetles into focuses?

I'm going to just echo what most others have said: don't call that a Beetle! No resemblance whatsoever. In calling it a Beetle, I hate the car. If were called something else, I actually could like it I think. But not as a Beetle.

The design is awful.

It's such a radical departure that it would be like VW making the Jetta into a minivan with dual sliding doors.

It totally looks like a Focus by the way, good call Audiophil!
