VW's up! - People's Car
I know there's been a lot of talk of VW's "people's car" concept-- I guess you all have probably already seen this, but--check it out

Yeah, I've seen it, but not this article. The mention of the rear wheels being in the corners worries me now. What would happen in a rear-end collision? I guess cars of this class aren't meant to necessarily survive a wreck, instead sacrificing themselves for passenger safety. I'm pretty sure the wheels/tires would be toast.
My understanding is that this was never meant as a replacement for the New Beetle. There has been talk about another rear-engined vehicle meant to look more like a Bug, but I don't think even it is a NB replacement. If nothing else, it might again carry the Beetle name. Thanks for the link! I like the 360* view!

I was browsing the forum while my grade 4 class was silent reading... I came accross the pictures of the VW UP and I gasped and then my entire class had to see it! We all loved it.
One kid whispered: "It looks like it's from the future!" --uhh... I guess it kinda is! One complaint... where are all the buttons?!?! I am sick of minimalist interiors on new cars... gimme toggles and buttons please! Lots of them!

Yeah, the lack of buttons is one of my big gripes, but for a different reason. It sounds like the controls are mostly touch-screen, but I worry about digital readouts for everything. I know the old electronic dashes used to burn out, and I can see that happening to these at some point, and that'd be bad news, as well as bad press. But it does look cool!

They look like a really neat car, but I guess it's just not for me... of course, this comes from the girl who's been drooling over the Camaro concept that's due out in October 2009

This in AutoWeek (Sep 24):
VW chairman Martin Winterkorn says there's a distint possibility the next-generation Beetle will sit on a stretched version of the Up! concept car's rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform. Winterkorn told Autoweek: "It's really not a problem to make a longer wheelbase, but width is something we'd have to discuss with the engineers."
