A lot of good that does me with a 9 year old 200,000+ mile Beetle!

Just kidding. Go, Volkswagen!

For some reason, the Beetle doesn't seem to have such great resale value.

Used NBs often sit on lots for very long times.

We purchased an NBC on 1/17/03, the 1st day of release. Traded it in sometime in July 03 for an 03 TurboS. Took about an $8K beating in those 6 months. I couldn't sit properly for quite a few months afterwards

I checked how much mine is worth on edmunds, about the amount I owe. My husbands Escape is worth about $7K less than what he owes, guess he will be keeping that one for a while longer.

I think resale values, blue book values, black book, etc., is something very hard to go by. When I was looking at my NBC, the dealer said it was worth $18.9K., KBB says $18K., NADA says $17.5K, and my credit union said $16.8K. After I traded in my SUV (which I owed about what it was worth according to KBB) I got the beetle after taxes for $16,000.01. I guess that means I go by what my credit union tells me. After all they are giving me the money for it.

I've thought about seeing if I could sell it for $18k and making a quick $2k, but I like her too much.

My '98 resale value is high for a ten year old car. In regards to various pricing methods, what I do is look at the NADA value and then add and subtract a thousand from the "average price" for a price range; so the average price for mine is somewhere in the neighborhood of four to six thousand. It has been my experience that lending institutions favor the low side of that price range.

After ten years and 244K miles later, that still represents 18%-22% of the original purchase price. Is there an "average" American or Japanese car that can boast the same thing?

I'm sorry friend, but you are dreaming. No sane person would pay that much money for your car due to age and mileage. I see '98s with 1/2 the mileage sell under $4K all the time and it took me a good long while to get rid of my nearly perfect 89K mile '98 in the summer of '03 for $6K. You'd be doing very well to get in the $2's NADA Book retail value is nuts, so is Kelley--it is a tool used by dealers to get as much possible out of a car. Go look at edmunds.com true market value, a private party sale on your car would be around $2K.

Yep, there is a DYCC at a dealer near me that has been on the lot over a year. and, it's a "mega-dealership" with lots of traffic in and out--go figure.

Did someone say that dreaming was a bad thing? Remember there is a sucker born every minute. For what it is worth here is Edmunds quote...

You're able to get exactly what someone is willing to pay. I've been around the car market for decades (4+) and have seen some pretty wild prices paid for give away rides.

I was just guessing too--missed it by $73.

Not too many suckers born who won't gasp and step back upon hearing 244,000 miles. If you do sell it I hope you find a ringer of a sucker FWIW.

No plans to sell it, ever... I just replaced the cylinder head and all related attaching parts; so the top half of the motor is new, I did it myself and she still purrs like a kitten.

I regards to gasping, look here... D2Beetle '98 Yellow GLS New Beetle little has changed from then to now, I rolled over 245,000 yesterday. Every time someone stops to talk and finds out it is 10 years old with 240K they do gasp! Mine gets frequently mistaken for a car that is only 3-5 years old.

Mileage usually doesn't bother me but 224000 I'd have to take a good look at it. If you have all service records ect... it'a a big help.

Just got our 2000 with 124890 on it for $4400 I am happy with our purchase. Moreover the misses is happy with it and that's all that counts

Resale value remains fabulous if the car is a diesel.

Yes I do, I keep all maintenance receipts, regardless of who does the work and I posted my cylinder head replacement on the ORG. Well I did it...

I even have a fuel log where I annotate the total mileage, miles driven, date, gallons/liters, cost, price per gallon/liter and miles per gallon/liter. I have been doing this since day one.
