Default VW brings back the Golf name in the US

Translated from: Volkswagen «gravlegger» kanin-navnet - VG Nett om Bil og trafikk

Since 1975, the model known in Europe as Volkswagen Golf been called both VW Rabbit and Golf in the US. But when the 6th generation of the model is launched in the US in October, the name will be Golf.

If we are to believe Volkswagen, then name "Rabbit" is buried once and for all. Golf gets its US premiere at the New York Auto Show in April.

"The name change is a part of a worldwide strategy to use the same model name in all markets" says VW spokesperson Tom Wegehaupt to Automotive News.

Volkswagen launched the Rabbit in the US in 1975, and used the name up to 1984.

The most important (sic) version of the VW Golf is the 2.5l, 5 cylinder gas engine with 170HP. VW also launches a 2.0l diesel engine with 140HP.

Yeah. VW was hoping renaming the MKV back to Rabbit in the states would spur some nostalgic feelings for buyers. It didn't work.

So it's back to Golf. Makes sense.

VW Kills Rabbit.

Not a good headline, PR-wise. What's next, VW hunts Easter Eggs with .458 Magnum?

That headline was mine. The literal translation from the article would be "VW buries rabbit name"

Makes sense. I kinda like golf better anyway, since that's what I've always known them as since my 85 and 89. I sure wish I had some pictures of that gold POS (the 85)
