Surely that won't replace the New Beetle, right? Looks like any other little car.

I think I might just stay in the 20th Century.

I don't understand why you can't build a M5 Beetle, but I'm no engineer. Or, maybe VW just doesn't want to, or can't justify the time and expense.

I think it is more of a spiritual replacement for the Beetle not something to take the place of the actual model. VW appears to see it as the new people's car.

Exactly. Just like the Fox was the "Modern Day Beetle".

They mean it's a more basic, affordable mode of transporation.

It's not the replacement of the New Beetle.

Besides, the Up! is not slated for the US market, anyway. As far as VW's "people's car," one would think that the Golf should now hold that title. Sales of this model surpassed those of the original Beetle quite a few years ago. If I'm not mistaken, close to 30 million Golfs have been built since 1975 while the old Beetle only hit 21.5 million. Only the Toyota Corolla has sold more, making the Golf the second-bestselling car of all time.

With that said; however, I hope VW continues with New Beetles after 2012.

when did the corolla outsell the golf? last i heard golf was #1.

and a fun fact, while we're at it: VW changed the name of the rabbit to golf for the MK2 generation because sales of the MK1 in north america badged as a rabbit did not count toward worldwide sales of the MK1 badged as a golf in the rest of the world. the name rabbit initially was going to be the name of the golf in north america, period. after the name change, and the golf became the top selling car in history, VW gave us back the rabbit badge. however they're taking it back for the MK6

You know ... if VW wants to make that E-UP!, that's all good ... but for goodness sake, don't call it a Beetle ...
