But the GX3 is not a done deal. There are those within VW who have concerns about handling, roadholding, and controllability and who question the appeal of the vehicle to U.S. buyers. In the words of a senior executive: "It's nice to be able to use the car-pool lane, but it's not so nice to have to wear a helmet, to be exposed to exhaust fumes and flying objects, and to sit so low that towering SUVs and big rigs pose a physical threat. I am not sure if we have thought this one through all the way."

VW reportedly has decided not to sell the GX3 through established distribution channels. Instead, the company might launch a junior brand that would be legally separate from Volkswagen. By doing so, any product-liability issues could be kept at arm's length, since, although it is closer to a car than to a motorcycle in size and appearance, the GX3 lacks a windshield, a stability control system, and air bags.

What I think a lot of folks are crying about is that this isn't their next vehicle of choice. It isn't supposed to be!

The GX3 is a vehicle that some of us will have a use for, and many of us will not. It is not supposed to be everything to everyone - it won't be sporting a six-speed DSG box and have 300 whp and get 50 mpg but still retain functional 6-disc changer with iPod adapter and full-sized cupholders.

This vehicle is for fun. If you like motorcycles you've already understood the concept of open-air fun. And if you'd shell out $18000 or more for a Harley, you'd certainly not consider the GX3 to be overpriced.

My longing for something unique like this is immense, but it has been squashed severely by a talk with my insurance agent who says that anything with fewer than four wheels is a motorcycle - and that anything that has three wheels is basically a "concept" or a rare item, a specialty thing, a fun toy, whatever you want to call it - the meaning of their classification is simple - $6000 (or more) annually to insure the thing.

I'd buy the Carver or the GX3 or something similar in a heartbeat if it wasn't nearly impossible to afford.

How 'bout buying an Ariel Atom instead?

It's probably more fun... and it's available now

The Ariel Atom - fastest thing on 4 (or 2) wheels

VW doesn't know what it wants to do! The last I read about the GX3, was that it was so close to getting the go ahead for production that they were picking out the fonts for the brochures.

Oh well, guess I'll have to take an Ariel Atom instead.
