True enough, however because there are only 750 of the RR's I'd like to know what one I have. I had been emailing a guy at VW regarding the RR and he stopped emailing me when I asked to know how to determine what number mine was

There are double the amount of Final Editions than RR's and the FE's are numbered.

Now that they are very successful, time to discard it. Shame on VW.
Te lady at the dealership said theyre updating a bunch of stuff on them. I hope thats all there doing. I love the look of the current beetle!

As long as the shape stays the same, or even closer to the original, I'm fine. I'd love a rear air cooled porsche engine I'd also like a dash that looks more like the old skool ones as well with a few upgrades of course. I might even buy another but then I'd need to make the driveway bigger (again)

edit: I'd like an AWD model with a bit higher clearance for winter. I'm pretty sure the won't be able to work that in but a girl can always dream.

The Vice-President of my VW Club just got a RR Edition, too. Can't wait to see it. Just in case the Beetle is truly dead, it's too bad most of us couldn't do the following: Depending on our age, buy a 2010 NB for each 10 years we think we'll live and hermetically seal the others until the previous one dies. That way, brand new Beetles would be available to us for the rest of our lives! At 50, I'd have to buy 3 of them, but I don't have $65,000- $70,000 to do that.........

Basically, the way I understand things now, is that IF a NB appears at the LA Auto Show this fall, then it's for real. If it doesn't, then all of these rumors of a 2nd Gen. are for naught, and it's killed.

I'm fairly certain it's called a final edition for a reason. Who knows what the future holds though. Maybe it will even be truer to the original

The rumour I have been hearing is that VW is going with the Up! car as a way to continue the idea of the original beetle - that is , rear engine , rear wheel drive , and inexpensive .

off the record, as a current VW employee (salesman) with ridiculously limited, bottom-floor info, We don't expect for the beetle to go away. We're expecting them to possibly miss a year or two on it, then we've been hearing a new body style is coming out. Supposedly longer body and meaner looking to appeal to more men or something. I don't know.

I'm actually at work sitting next to a final edition conv. right now. :P it isn't a bad looking car, and the red rock is really hot. Wish they made it with a 2.0T 6-speed though. Or maybe TDI to raise environmental awareness?

It's been in multiple publications lately that VW canned that idea.

on the bright side, badging on the side of the vert is the closest we've gotten to a wolfsburg edition bug. rofl.

So has the whole Up! idea been killed, or just the rear engine, RWD speculation? I actually hope to see a Space Up! micro minivan whether a Beetle soldiers on or not. I just can't get past the idea that Routans are really Chryslers......

It was the final edition though. In 1979 it was called the Epilogue Edition. Named and styled after the ones produced in the 1930's. From the 1930's to 1979 the shape was pretty much unchanged except for the fact that windows went from non existant in the back to split to oval to regular and then the front window changed a bit.

When they returned in 1998 they took a little getting used to for type 1 purists. A lot of people who love the original still don't care for the nB. They're similar but not really the same.

I fear a change as dramatic as the switch from the type 1 body to the nB body personally. I think it only worked because of the twenty year cooling off period though.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the original air-cooled Beetle had continued in the US beyond 1979. I'm surprised that there wasn't a massive protest when it was dropped. But thanks to tougher emission and safety standards, this is all hindsight. I went to Mexico back in 1995 and remember how weird it was to see brand new Beetles driving around. Many of them were taxi cabs!

They were phased out as taxis in Mexico after the law was changed to require all taxis to have four doors. I'd imagine there were so many beetles on the road in 1979 that nobody thought twice about it. I'm not old enough to have been buying cars in that year so I can't do any more than speculate.

From what I've read, they canned the idea of having several different types of models of the Beetle. So there may not be the MKVI plus the Up! based model. They'd just stick with the main Beetle model, and not worry about all the other little "beetle-like" models.

In 1979, I was 20, and DEVASTATED when I learned the Beetle was to be dropped. I was an air-cooled snob in those days and refused to acknowledge Rabbits or any other water-cooleds as "real" Volkswagens. It took over 20 years for me to finally realize how awesome water-cooled VW's are.

Pushing 50, we must be cut from the same cloth. Those were my exact sentiments back then too. In my case I was ready to buy a car and my choice was a beetle, but they axed them. I absolutely despised the Rabbits back then. Like you, i've come to love the little buggers.

I just recently bought a 2010 New Beetle Convertible Final Edition. It definitely turns heads! I bought it one week ago, and all I get is thumbs-up from pedestrians, waves, and people gaulking! Mine is 1403 of 1500 off the line. This is my first Beetle and I LOVE IT!
