The EPA did not approve the new TDI systems for the rest of the lineup as they are not using the old common rail system anymore. VW moved away from the common rail system and went with a more efficent system. With the new system there will be no more fear of running out of diesel or air in the lines and having to get the pump retimmed, the system will be more like direct port. This also means less maintance and it will be even more efficent than the current models, which most hybrids and other desiels already have a hard time keeping up. IMO...it is the EPA banning a more efficent car that would hurt US cars (GM, Ford, ect..) as they are not able to keep up and would rather pump out guzzlers and force the public spend more at the pump and keep money in big oil company's pockets.

There are no new TDI systems to be rejected by the EPA. Quite the opposite. It is the current TDI that cannot pass the new EPA requirements. In fact VW is dumping the current TDI in favor of a common rail based TDI design for 2008. Not the other way around.
"Volkswagen is to abandon its Pumpe Düse single-injector technology and join the common-rail club, but the company insists that its single-injector technology will stay in use until 2012. The first Volkswagen engine to switch from unit injection to common-rail will be the five-cylinder 2.5-litre unit fitted to the European Crafter van. The first common-rail vehicle for the US market will be the new Jetta in 2008." "When common-rail introduced, the PD will be dropped, but VW will continue with its registered trademark TDI. Buckett Commented: “The letters in trademarks may not always convey a literal meaning. In the Volkswagen application they could be interpreted as ‘Turbo Diesel Injection’.” The company has also introduced TSI in Europe to describe its Turbocharged Supercharged Injection gas engines." According to Edmunds the triple white comes out in spring 07 "Volkswagen said a special model of the New Beetle is also planned for 2007. It will be a white-on-white model that will go on sale in spring 2007. It will feature a white interior and exterior and a white trunk lid, although the top will be black. No pricing has been set yet."

Lets face it, VW is only dropping the PD because they can produce the CR technology cheaper, and at an expense to the consumer. i.e. more profit, and the consumer gets a less efficient vehicle.
I will bet any amount that the PD side to side with the CR in 2008 with ULSD in the tank, the PD will win emissions, economy, and noise level hands down. Sure power may be better, as it was from the ALH to the BEW. The only benifit with be the investment under the hood, that VW saw $$$$$ from. . I also saw somewhere that the new '06 tail lights are already getting a design update for '07.

It has nothing to do with the engine. It has to do with the abiliy to use exhaust treatment systems to further reduce particulate matter using ULSD. CR technology just happens to coincide with the change. They are not dependent on each other. A quote from the article "In December 2005, however, it announced the move to common rail and gives cost and advances in common rail injector technology as the main reasons." Broken down to saves money, and CR is now on par with PD.. As for a step up.. How come the Toureg and Phaeton are keeping the PD design..?. Hmmmm quick someone call VW and tell them that their top 2 models are "substandard" Last edited by dunno513; 06-30-2006 at 12:52 AM.. |

Aww.. I like em.. Wonder how much different the 07's will be. probably just a minor tweak. I can't see VW dropping a cosmetic retro look after just one year. I wish they would redesign those marker lights. The rounded ones look so much better than the rectangular 06's Maybe just trim the edges and keep the thin profile. |
