2001 1.8T Won't shift into 1st Gear
Can't get the shifter to fully engage 1st gear. Pulled the air box to look around and can get all the gears to engage but it won't go all the way into 1st. Could this be a problem in the shifter area inside the car? Are there any known problems that would make it the transmission? How do you pull the cable ends off without breaking them? If I get the cable off I can check the trans arm without the shifter hooked up. This should tell me if it's the trans or not. Some input would be great. thx matt

Possibly a shift fork issue?

This is a 5-speed. The Turbo S is the only one with a 6-speed and that didn't start until 2002. I've not heard of shift fork problems in the 5-speeds, only the 6-speeds. The forum that's from is for cars that come with the 6-speed as well (GLI, 337, 20th).

Indy Tom,
Checked out the video and set the cable adjustment. All the gears work fine. The problem is that the Lever on the trans won't rotate all the way into the first gear detent. At the differnt heights for the different gears it works fine it just won't go all the way into first gear. Any Ideas? thx matt

Just saw a note somewhere about the 1-2 slider hub getting damaged by missing a gear. Could this be possible? matt
