The VW Part Numbers for this hood are... 1C0 823 031 J or 1C0 823 031 M

just a heads up, there are two different hoods. And they don't fit exactly the same.

The VW dealer finally called back...

According to the dealer in my area the "M" (the last digit) superseded the "J" and it is for '98 thru '01 models only. So I had the dealer check two of my vins, the wife's '00 and my son's '99; they said both of mine were "L". So when I asked what was the difference, their explanation vague and speculative.

Would these be on sale at a dealer as well?

The $170 to ship kind of defeats the purpose.

to be honest I couldn't really tell you the difference in the hoods either. I do know that the interior frame is slightly different as well as the "bumper" locations. I have a spare hood at home and the shape seems to be the same, but no matter what I do, it will not latch using the OEM latch assembly on my car.

Looks like there were also 2 latches.

1C0823509AD or 1C0823509F - appears to have been on 1.8t beetles
1C0823509AE or 1C0823509E- appears to be on TDI, 2.0, and 2.5 Beetles

Not sure if that makes any difference as to which hood fits. I'm guessing the new "M" coded hood will fit either, which is why it supersedes the old part # hoods.

Still couldn't tell you which models the "J" hood would fit.

Although looking around at other sources, there's seems to be a split in 2000. There's an OEM hood listed on Ebay that says it fits
Quote:

o BEETLE 00 from VIN 465984
o BEETLE 01-05
So possibly the "J" hood fits 98-00

I think the early beetles had a prop rod instead of the gas charged lift support.

From my previous dealer conversations, yes the savings can be pass on to the customer; however dealer can set there own prices, regardless.

Yes my '98 uses the prop rod and I'm calling the dealer today to see if the "J" and/or "M" hood is for those NB's that use the prop rod.

only early 98's had props. I would assume there is more too it then just the prop/hydro mount. Then again it could be for a difference in Latches as well.

Ok, this is getting bizarre... my next call to the dealer yielded this information. Spoke to a different parts guy; the 1C0 823 031 J/M are supposed to fit '03 thru '05 NB and NBC's. 1C0 823 031 L are 98 thru 02.

So it seems that I'm SOL.

A little off topic here, and new life to an old thread. But does anyone know how to replace the hood strut or can anybody point me to a DIY thread that would show me how? Thanks for your time and help.
